USA Today/Gallup has a new poll out showing a majority of Americans disapprove of the NSA phone collection and an even larger majority want hearings. Atrios has all the details on it. This shows us now that America is not pleased and should show the Washington Post that you can not run a poll on the same day as a story breaks and have it done in a single day while expecting accurate results.

Re:

Class action suits are an appropriate response to the actions by telephone companies. However there is a far more powerful action that individuals can take. A Company who sells your phone records to the government is guilty of a material breach of contract. I have just notified my service provider, Verizon, that I have cancelled my service, effective immediately. If they ignore my request, I have informed them that the next communication will be with my lawyer.

As consumers we have a right to choose who to purchase products from. Imagine a quick stop at the local KFC. If to complete the purchase you were required to produce your drivers license and have your thumbprint scanned for future government use, would you continue to visit this store? For that matter would you make the purchase? Why then would you purchase phone services?

It will not take too many cancelled subscriptions to help Verizon understand the bottom line impact of this illegal decision

Re:

Who will you be getting your service from? The first thing I did Friday morning was google Qwest. Not available in my area.

Re:

I am in the same boat - no QWEST here. I am not worried about the calls I make so I am taking a different approach now. I am calling people left and right and if it is a long call then I will hang up and call back or have them call me back. Do that a couple times and really add to the size of their database.

Jamie - I came to your blog from FDL because your name was mentioned as their "tech genius". I have a question for you, off topic, if you'll forgive me.

Ever since they updated their website, I have been unable to read complete topics and comments because of an office filter that labels the site "pornography" (!!!) I never had any trouble accessing the site prior to March. Is there any way around this problem?
