(updated and bumped)
The Muckraker has uncovered a gem from the DOJ document dump:
Four months after the San Diego United States Attorney's office launched an investigation into whether he had accepted bribes from defense contractors, and little more than a month before he pled guilty to those charges, Rep. Duke Cunningham (R-CA) signed on to a letter criticizing U.S. Attorney Carol Lam's "lax" handling of immigration crimes.
Well Duke, why do you think it was "lax"? Could it have something to do with the fact she had to investigate all YOUR corruption?
This sure sounds like one of possibly many smoking guns to come out over the next few days. Raw Story has also learned that John Conyers is seeking subpoenas for Rove, Miers and others. This story is far from over.
UPDATE:
Think Progress has this little gem:
White House won’t allow Rove, Miers testimony. MSNBC’s Mike Viquiera: “Fred Fielding, he’s the White House counsel, he was just here meeting with the House Judiciary Committee. He made the following offer to the Congress, both House and Senate. He said Rove and Harriet Miers would be offered to the committees for their testimony in the Alberto Gonzales prosecutors scandal. However, it would be unsworn testimony, not under oath, behind closed doors, and no transcript would be permitted. Now, that is not what Congress is looking for.â€
Now if there is no wrong-doing here, then why such restrictions? Sounds like the White House is planning on Rove and Miers lying to Congress. That further proves this administration has total disgregard for oversight.
Tagged:BREAKING: Former CIA #3 Indicted In Cunningham Scandal
Tue Feb 13, 2007 at 03:20 pm
A federal grand jury issued indictments on Tuesday against Poway defense contractor Brent Wilkes and former high-ranking CIA official Kyle "Dusty" Foggo, childhood friends from San Diego who are embroiled in the Randy "Duke" Cunningham congressional corruption scandal.
The U.S. Attorney's office wouldn't comment on the matter, but has scheduled a midday news conference. The two men are expected to surrender at an arraignment in federal court Wednesday or Thursday.
Sources have told The San Diego Union-Tribune that Wilkes and Foggo could be charged with fraud and conspiracy in connection with a contract to supply bottled water to CIA operatives in Iraq.
Hopefully more of these crooks will go down like this. Cunningham, a veteran, showed disgrace towards the military by accepting these bribes. The Republicans worked to protect him until the day he finally went to prison. This is what a GOP controlled government produced. This is one thing America voted to change last November.
